Winter dressing can be an expensive thing. All that cashmere; those big woollen coats, boots that inexplicably cost three times a pair of sandals. Gah! So when it comes to winter dressing I basically go big (essentially I buy the best quality item I can afford) and then go home for three years. In other words, I make them last forever.
An example…I have four coats I wear on rotation. Year in. Year out. There’s an old, old Celine navy Crombie coat, a good khaki-coloured mac also Celine but literally on its last legs (and arms); a giant puffa jacket for walks in the country and an oversized Brunello Cucinelli camel coat (a sample sale purchase- I cannot afford BC full-price alas, but if I could I would buy from here for the rest of my life since the quality is so good). This year I did make one concession however, which was an oversized black coat from Cos (now sold out but they may restock I have been told) because I wanted to inject some Scandinavian influencer style into my wardrobe and it does the job perfectly. (Since this is now sold out i would opt for this one instead)
Anyway, the whole point of today’s missive is how do you manage to look current whilst essentially wearing the same winter uniform you’ve had for years ? The good news is, it’s easy. You just choose smart winter accessories. And the brilliant thing is we are not talking about throwing a scarf over it all. Winter accessories are plentiful and brilliant.
So I’ve compiled a jumbo list of all the best ones below, as well as the ones I have already bought or plan on buying, so we can match. As always jump into The Chat if you want to discuss this at length or if you have found anything we should all know about.
Happy winter dressing!

The Boho Bib
Where the poncho meets the pashmina is this creation from one of my favourite brands, By Malene Birger. Throw it over a cashmere jumper and jeans for early winter; or place it over your coat to add interest.
The 80s Snood
French brand Bompard do an incredible range of cashmere snoods and bibs. I love this one in zingy orange pepping out from beneath an inky black coat.
The Funky Sock
If, like me, your feet are on the biggish side (I’m a 39.5) then the best socks around have to be these men’s cashmere socks from Bamford. I love a spritely sock peeping out from beneath a jean hem. These would look excellent with some New Balance trainers. (If you have the means and smaller feet then you can still buy the Miu Miu and New Balance collab here which I totally missed out on in my size)
The 60s Triangle Scarf
Triangle scarves are big news this season. I just bought this red one one on the recommendation of
excellent Substack. And this leopard one is next on my hit list. It adds a much needed shot of colour to a sombre winter coat and draws attention up and away from said coat so no one has any idea its from a/w 2019.
